How the MCS-150 schedule works

Every motor carrier with a USDOT number must update its registration, the MCS-150 form, every 24 months. The federal rule (49 CFR 390.19(b)) spreads the deadlines across the calendar using two digits of the number:

DigitWhat it decidesRule
Last digitMonth1 = January, 2 = February ... 9 = September, 0 = October
Next-to-last digitYearOdd digit: odd-numbered years. Even digit (including 0): even-numbered years.

The update is due by the last day of that month. If this year's deadline has already passed, the calculator moves to the next matching year.

Example: a number ending in 47 has a last digit of 7 (July) and a next-to-last digit of 4 (even), so it files by July 31 of every even-numbered year.

Why insurance agents use it

An MCS-150 deadline is a natural reason to call a carrier: it is a compliance task every carrier has, and the fleet size, driver count and mileage it reports shape the insurance conversation. Read more in MCS-150 biennial updates and why they matter to agents.

Questions

How is the MCS-150 due date worked out?

Under 49 CFR 390.19(b), the last digit of the USDOT number sets the month (1 is January through 9 is September, and 0 is October) and the next-to-last digit sets the year: odd digits file in odd-numbered years, even digits in even-numbered years. The update is due by the last day of that month, every 24 months.

Do I still have to file if nothing changed?

Yes. The biennial update is required even when every detail is the same. Filing confirms the record is current.

What happens if a carrier misses the MCS-150 update?

The regulation provides for civil penalties and deactivation of the USDOT number. A carrier with a deactivated number should not operate until the record is updated.

Can I file early?

A carrier can update its registration whenever its details change. This calculator shows only the scheduled biennial deadline; it does not know when a carrier last filed.

Is this an official FMCSA tool?

No. It applies the published schedule to the number you enter. Trucking Leads is not affiliated with FMCSA. Confirm a carrier's status on FMCSA's own systems.
